Muscles of the lateral leg Flashcards
Which muscles make up the lateral compartment of the leg?
Fibularis Longus
Fibularis Brevis.
What is the collective function of the muscles of the lateral leg?
Eversion of the foot.
turning the sole of the foot outwards
Where is the origin of Fibularis Longus?
The superior and lateral surfaces of the fibula and lateral tibial condyle.
Where does Fibularis Longus insert?
The fibres converge into a tendon, which descends into the foot, posterior to the lateral malleolus.
The tendon crosses under the foot, and attaches to the bones on the medial side, namely the medial cuneiform and base of metatarsal I.
What are the actions of Fibularis Longus?
Eversion and plantarflexion of the foot. Also supports the lateral and transverse arches of the foot.
What innervates Fibularis Longus?
Superficial Fibular nerve
Where is the origin of Fibularis Brevis?
Originates from the inferolateral surface of the fibular shaft.
Where does Fibularis Brevis insert?
The muscle belly forms a tendon, which descends with the fibularis longus into the foot. It travels posteriorly to the lateral malleolus, passing over the calcaneus and the cuboidal bones. (Then attaches to the 5th metatarsal bone according to kenhub)
What is the action of Fibularis Brevis?
Eversion of the foot.
What innervates Fibularis Brevis?
Superficial Fibular nerve.
