Muscles of the Gluteal region Flashcards
Which muscles make up the Superficial muscles of the gluteal region, and what are their main functions?
The three glutei and the tensor fascia lata.
They mainly act to abduct and extend the lower limb at the hip joint.
Where is the origin of Gluteus Maximus?
Originates from the gluteal (posterior) surface of the ilium, sacrum and coccyx.
Where does the Gluteus Maximus insert?
Into the iliotibial tract and the gluteal tuberosity of the femur.
What is the actions of Gluteus Maximus?
It is the main extensor of the hip, and assists with lateral rotation of the thigh.
However, it is only used when force is required, such as running or climbing.
What innervates the Gluteus maximus?
Inferior gluteal nerve.
Where is the origin of Gluteus Medius?
Originates from the gluteal surface of the ilium
Where does Gluteus Medius insert?
Inserts into the lateral surface of the greater trochanter.
What is the action of Gluteus Medius?
Abducts and medially rotates the lower limb. During locomotion, it secures the pelvis, preventing pelvic drop of the opposite limb.
What innervates Gluteus Medius?
Superior Gluteal nerve.
Where is the origin of Gluteus Minimus?
Originates from the ilium
Where does Gluteal Minimus insert?
Converges to form a tendon, which inserts to the anterior side of the greater trochanter.
What is the action of Gluteus Minimus?
Abducts and medially rotates the lower limb. During locomotion, it secures the pelvis, preventing pelvic drop.
What nerve innervates Gluteus Minimus?
Superior gluteal nerve.
Where does Tensor Fascia Lata originate from?
Originates from the anterior iliac crest, attaching to the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS).
Where does Tensor Fascia Lata insert?
It inserts into the iliotibial tract, which itself attaches to the lateral condyle of the tibia.
