Post Op Complications Flashcards
Atelectasis
collaspe of alveoli due to hypoventilation
CMs for Atelectasis
decreased or absent bs, decreased o2, chest asymmetry, fever, tachypnea, dyspnea, tachycardia, diaphoresis, restlessness, anxiety
Nursing Care for Atelectasis
Incentive spirometry, encourage deep breathing, coughing, moving in bed, ambulation.
Pneumonia
inflammation of alveoli due to infection with bacteria and viruses
CMs for pneumonia
productive cough, fever, elevated WBC, decreased o2, chest pain, tachypnea, dyspnea
Nursing care for Pneumonia
encourage and assist with deep breathing, coughing, moving in bed, ambulation, use of IS
Aspiration Pneumonia
airway inflammation caused by inhaling gastric secretions bc of absent gag reflex from anesthesia
CMs for aspiration pneumonia
cough, fever, decreased or absent breathe sounds, decreased 02, tachypnea, dyspnea, blood tinged sputum
Nursing care for Aspiration pneumonia
Preop- NPO for atleast 8 hrs prior to surgery
Postop- Continue NPO until mobility returns, place patient in side lying position
Pulmonary embolism
a clot that occludes blood flow to a portion of the lungs
CMs of pulmonary embolism
sudden onset of dyspnes, chest pain, hypotension, cyanosis, decreased 02
Nursing care for pulmonary embolism
identify high risk patients, administer aintcoauglants, leg exercises, hydration
