‘Other Christian’ groups
- Smaller denominations which do not have major numbers
- They are outside of the ‘recognised’ christian denominations
White Australian Policy
Government policies that effectively barred people of non-European descent from immigrating to Australia from 1901-1945, with the remnants of the policy abolished in 1973
Secular
Not connected with religious or spiritual matters
- Based on the idea that gov and society should be free from religious influence
Ecumenism
The principle or aim of promoting unity among the world’s christian churches
Sectarianism
Excessive attachment to a particular sect or party, especially in religion
Interfaith
relating to or involving different religions or members of different religions
Reconciliation
Restoration of friendly relations, actions or making one view or belief compatible with another
Terra Nullius
Land belonging to no one
Kinship
System that determines how and to who people relate
Elders
Someone who has gained recognition as a custodian of knowledge and lore, and who has permission to disclose knowledge and belief
Ceremonial life
Rites of passage are for the major changes in life, used for teaching lore and spiritual beliefs
Country
The land that one inhabits, deep spiritual connection they have
Dreaming
- The belief or understanding of spirituality of Australian Aboriginal people
- Linked to the creation process and spiritual ancestors
Protectionism
Protection of a ‘dying race’ - separation from land and family begins
Missions
Places run by churches to care for aboriginal children that have been removed from their homes, learn skills that are considered useful, learn english
Reserve
Place to live when removed from land, looked after by white authority
Assimilation
Living like whites, removal from homes, expectation that they will adopt the majority of culture
Metatemporal
About creation, the big picture, ancestors
Dispossession
Activity causing the destruction of whole tribes
Stolen Generation
The forcible removal of children from their parents over a number of years so that they would be brought up in ‘civilised’ European surroundings
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
- General term of different peoples often grouped under the umbrella term of Indigenous Australians
- They are the original/traditional custodians of the land
Native Title
The right of Aboriginal peoples to own their traditional lands and water, as recognised by common law
Self-determination
An ‘ongoing process of choice’ to ensure that indigenous communities are able to meet their social, cultural and economic needs
- Not about creating a separate Indigenous ‘State’
Clan
Fundamental social and political group of people who relate to each other through a common Dreaming ancestors
- Linked by marriage and/or other genetic relations
Totem
A spirit being, sacred object, or symbol that acts as the emblem of a group of people, such as a family, lineage, or tribe
