GENERAL BODY POSITIONS
Refer to the overall position of the patient
Erect
Standing or seated
Recumbent
Lying down in any position
Prone (Ventral Recumbent)
Lying on anterior surface
Supine (Dorsal recumbent)
Lying on posterior surface (face up)
Trendelenberg
With the patient in a supine position, the head is lower than the feet, used to increase blood flow to the brain in hypotension, vasovagal reactions, & shock.
Fowler’s
With the patient in a supine position, the head is higher than the feet, used for patients with respiratory distress.
Simms
Patient is rotated forward, from a lateral position with the top leg over and in front of the bottom leg, used to relax the external anal sphincter for ease of enema tip insertion.
