BODY HABITUS
The term habitus is used to describe physical characteristics to include the size, shape, muscle tone of the body, as well as the position of internal organs. There are generally four (4) body habitus classifications: 1. Hypersthenic 2. Sthenic 3. Hyposthenic 4. Asthenic
Hypersthenic
5% of population Large, heavy body Broad thorax
Elevated diaphragm & short lungs
Stomach & gallbladder very high, almost horizontal or transverse
Sthenic
50% of population Average, athletic build
Thorax slightly longer and narrower Diaphragm not as high & longer lungs
Stomach & gallbladder lower and less horizontal
Hyposthenic
35% of population Somewhat slighter build Thorax longer
Diaphragm low, lungs long
Stomach & gallbladder lower and closer to midline
Asthenic
I 0% of population Slender and light body Thorax narrow
Diaphragm very low, lungs long
Stomach & gallbladder very low, close to midline and vertical
