ANATOMICAL POSITION
Refers to the position of the body as standing erect, with all anterior surfaces of the body facing forward; the arms are down with the palms (palmar surfaces) of the hands facing forward.
Anterior (Ventral):
Refers to forward or front
Posterior (Dorsal):
Refers to backward or back of a body part
Lateral:
To the right or left of the midsagittal plane or the middle of a specific part. Be aware that the term lateral can refer to the relationship between two structures (the kidneys are lateral to the spine), a patient position (left lateral position),or a projection (right lateral projection)
Unilateral
One side
Dorsum
Anterior surface or top of foot (Generally refers to posterior part except when used in relation to the foot or toes)
Plantar Surface
Sole or posterior portion of the foot
Palmar Surface
Palm or anterior surface of the hand
