Civil Rights
guarantees of equal protection under the law; rooted in the 14th Amendment
Civil Rights Act of 1866
extended citizenship to anyone born in the US and gave blacks full equality before the law
Enforcement Act of 1870
provided specific criminal penalties for interfering with the right to vote
Second Civil rights Act of 1875
everyone entitled to full and equal enjoyment of public accommodations and places
Civil Rights Act of 1872
Anti-Klu Klux Klan Act made it a federal crime to deprive anyone of their constitution rights and privileges
Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)
upheld segregation by allowing separate-but-equal access
Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954)
segregation in public schools violated the equal protection clause
Civil Rights Movement
era of civil rights protests beginning in the 1950’s
Civil Disobedience
a non-violent refusal to obey allegedly unjust laws.
Civil Rights Act of 1964
prohibited discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender, and national origin; outlawed arbitrary voter discrimination
Voting Rights Act of 1965
prohibited discriminatory voter-registration requirements; required federal approval to change voting procedures
Civil Rights Act of 1968
prohibited housing discrimination
Women’s Movement
began with attempts to secure the right to vote for women
Susan B. Anthony & Elizabeth Stanton
began Nat’l Woman Suffrage Movement in 1860’s
Nineteenth Amendment
gave women the right to vote
Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)
failed attempt to eradicate gender inequality through a constitutional amendment
