Ports 2 Flashcards
What is SATA cabling used for? What is their appearance?
It is an interface type used to connect hard drives and other storage devices to the motherboard inside the computer.
They are long and thin and have a 7 pin connector.
What are basic SATA cables used for?
For connecting SATA storage drives to the motherboard.
The connector has an L shaped key so that it can only be installed one way.
What are SATA data and power cables for?
The base SATA cables do not provide power, so another SATA cable is required for that.
What are eSATA cables used for?
They are used to connect to external SATA drives.
What are eSATA adapters used for?
They are often insalled on motherboards to add eSATA functionality.
What are twisted pair cables and connectors?
They are used in wired ethernet and older telephone networks.
They get their name from the twisted cabling in thier interior. This is used to reduce crosstalk and electromagnetic induction.
What are RJ-45 used for?
They are used in ethernet networks.
They must be terminated at the end by a connector at the end.
What are the forms of twisted pair cables?
Unshielded Twisted Pair and Shielded Twisted Pair.
UTP and STP.
UTP is the most common.
It consists of uninsulated copper wires without the foil and braiding found in STP.
Where is RJ-11 used? How many pins?
It is a form used in older telephone networks.
It has 6 pins.
What is the structure of Coax cables and connectors?
It has an inner cables typically made from copper or copper clad steel. It is the insualted bynon-conductive dielectric material.
The dielectric material is surrounded by a foil shield whihc forms the outer conductor and shields against electromagnetic interferance (EMI).
The outer conductor/shield is cased in a PVC jacket.
What is Coax cabling construction?
Outer jacket pulls back to reveal braided shielding and copepr core conductor.
What are the specifications of R-95? What is its common usage?
It is thinner and better in low bandwidth and low frequency applications.
It is typically used in analog and CCTV.
What are the specifications of RG-6? What are its common uses?
It is heavy gage and used in high bandwidth and high frequency applications.
It is typically used for Internet, Cabel TV and Satellite TV applications.
What are BNC connectors used for?
They are coaxial cables used to connect devices in a quarter-turn scheme.
It is used with digital or analog audio/video.
What are SCSI cables and connectors used for?
Small Computer Systems Interferance (SCSI) cables are a standard for connecting perpheral or storage devices.
They are a bus technology, meaning that all devices are connected to a central bus and are ‘daisy-chained’ together.
The cabling/connector requirements depend on the location.
