Legacy Ports Flashcards
Where are legacy ports found? What hav they typcially been replaced by?
On older computers.
They have been replaced by newer technologies such as USB.
What were serial ports used for? How may pins did they take?
They were used for conencting to printers, scannaers and modems. Today they are sometimes used for connecting console deives to networks to perform initial configuration.
Their two form factors are 9-pin DB9 port and 25-pin.
What were parrallel ports used for? How many pins did they take?
They were sed to send data in multiple bits and once, in a parrallel conncection.
They took 25 pins.
Because they were used for printers, they were sometimes called printer ports.
What were game ports used for? How many pins did they take?
They were used for joystick input. They were later integrated with sound cards and PC motherboards.
They took 15 pins.
What were PS/2 ports used for? How many pins did they take?
Used for connecting a keyboard and mouse. Purple for keyboard, green for mouse.
They took six pins.
What were audio ports used for?
For connecting audio devices.
Analog ports typically include a line in port to connect to an external source suhc as a stereo system, microphone and line out ports to connect speakers and headphones.
What are VGA ports used for? How many pins do they take?
They are analog graphics ports, that are still somewhat in use today. Though they are quickly becoming legacy ports.
They are blue and take 15 pins over three rows of 5.
What is DVI used for? How many pins do they take?
They are used for LCD monitors and TVs. They are used for transmitting uncompressed video data.
24-4.
What are the three variants of DVI? What are the two conenction types?
They have three variants. DVI-A for Analog, DVI-D for Digital and DVI-I for both.
They have single link connections that use Transmision Minimized Differential Signaling (TSMD) and dual link, which uses two TMDI connections to provide higher-resolutions to larger monitors.
What is HDMI used for? How many pins does it take?
The same as DVI, but it also provides digital audi and control signals.
19 pins.
What is DisplayPort used for? How many pins does it take?
It is to replace DVI and VGA for connecting to monitors.
It takes 20 pins to deliver high bandwidth video and audio.
It has a smaller variant for apple computers called Mini DisplayPort, similar to HDMI.
What are the four relevant forms of USB? What are their features?
USB 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.2
- 0-Low transfer at 1.2 Mbps, high at 12 Mbps and they were used for mice and keyboards.
- 0-Significant leap for high transfer at 480 Mbps
- 0- Increased to superspeed 5 Gbps.
- 2- Latest USB-C supports up to 20 Gbps.
What is USB-A used for?
It is found on virtually every desktop PC and Laptop, as well as TVs, games consoles and media players.
Used with 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0
What is the Mini USB?
It is the USB-B Mini. It is rectangular with indentations on each side.
This is being phased out and replaced with Micro USB.
What is Micro USB used for?
It is used with smartphones, tablets and other such devices.
Except for Apple, most have adopted this.
The USB micro connector has two corners pushed in at an angle.
