What do multicore processors have that single cores don’t?
More than one processor on the same integrated circuit.
In some core architechtures, what do their CPUs have?
Seperate L2 and L3 caches.
In others however, the cache is sharedamongst others for better performance and resource allocation.
What is shared between all the different processors?
RAM, as they are ultimately still all on the same chip.
What is a multicore processor recommended for?
Applications such as Video Editing, Gaming and Photo Manipulation.
What is the benefit of having so many processors on the same integaretd circuit?
They have a very fast connection.
They execute intsructions muhc faster.
Whyis having a multi-core processor better than multiple single cores?
Because they produce less heat overall.
This is because Multicore conserve more power and produce less heat.
What is a GPU?
A chip that performs rapid mathematical equations in order to render graphics.
What is sometimes integrated into the CPU?
The graphics processing unit. GPU.
What are the benefits and trade off on intergaretd GPUs?
The benefit is less heat and less cost.
The tradeoff is less performance. They are not good in high spec systems.
What ahve some CPUs been built with?
The NX bit.
What is the NX bit?
A feature, that when supported and enabled in the operating system, can protect areas of memory that contain operating system files from malicious atatcks by malware.
What are the five relevant cooling mechanisms?
Case Fan. CPU Heat Sink. CPU Fan. Graphics Card Cooling System. Water Cooling System.
What are the features of case fans?
Increaases the air flow in the case, allowing for cooling.
Some blow out hot air, while others blow in cool air.
What are the features of CPU heatsinks?
Draws heataway from the CPU. Installed on top of the CPU. Dissipates heat into the air. It cools passively. Thermal paste between the CPU and heatsink aids the heat transfer.
What are the features of CPU fans?
Installed on top of CPUs.
Active cooling method.
