What is Populism? What are its characteristics?
A “thin” ideology that sees ‘the people’ as the silent majority which are the image of all virtue and their misrepresentation by the corrupt elites.
Populists present themselves as victims, promote anti-elitism, the national sovereignty and pride, and are homogenous, excluding the elites and foreigners. They should be at the source of all political motivation.
Why does populism arise?
- Disappearance of Reliable High-Quality Jobs due to technological changes
- Economic growth, flat wages, perceived unfairness
- Unresponsive Governments amidst Global Constraints
- Increased awareness of political corruption
- Status declines for traditionally privileged
- Nationalist resurgence – take back our country and way of life.
What does populism contribute to democracy?
-can give the silenced majority a platform and enable awareness for certain controversial topics like immigration policy
How may populism seem non-democratic?
This false sense of “the people” and their misrepresentation can be used by political leaders to combat democratic norms and institutions.
The US Case
- Populist takeover republican gov
- Trump promised border security and infrastructural changes like public health to bring about a sense of security for the insecure.
- Points to the elitist corruption and the Deep State for rigging the system against him, the leader of the people.
The Venezuela Case
- Hugo Chavez goes populist in early 200s.
- Manipulated elections and eroded democracy while building partisan support.
- Weakening of oil sector and general economy.
What are the characteristics of populist parties?
- Various types ranging from left to right
- Succeed with charisma, group cohesion (organization), proportional representation elections systems (because threshold is lowered)
What Populism’s critique of the mainstream parties?
They are out of touch with the people and all the same meaning insignificantly varied in ideology

No they tend to stick to their convictions/ideologies more than electoral strategies and winning
What does “thin-centred” ideology mean in terms of populism?
Populism itself does not have all the answers, it attaches its beliefs to a host ideology like socialism which is why its varied in types.
