Economic - leverage in international relations in our globalizing age
Soft - persuasion and influence
Structural - influence of direction of interests
Define the international system
Polarization of power resources and their concentrations.
Bipolar - The major powers in zero-sum competition which developed after World war II the cold war.
Multipolarity - Encouraging of shifts in alliances in order to maintain balance in the system. Stakes not clear and conflict arises out of misperceptions.
Unipolarity - after collapse of soviet union US became hyper socioeconomic power and leader of the world
Rise of China
Reforms of Maoism China focused on economic development which lead to “Market Stalinism”. A capitalist system run by one party.
Dimensions of Chinese Power
Mostly economic due to logic of reforms
Soft power flows through the spread of chinese values, culture, language, and historical education around the world
Structural power through leadership in World bank and asian economic structures
Contra realism to peaceful rise of China
Interdependence of socioeconomics between states
No arms race
No clear ideological conflict
American international oder is not a problem for China
What does it mean when it is said that China cannot rise peacefully?
From a realist point of view, a dominant power will inevitably fall into conflict
