Nuclear Proliferation Flashcards
Nuclear weapons?
Post-WWII, large increase in weapons and countries possessing them along with early signs of interstate cooperation
What is the non proliferation treaty?
The treaty aims to keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of Non nuclear states by agreement and inspection
How well did the treaty work? Why?
It was an astounding success for international regime. It worked because NWS offered civilian nuclear support and promised to deter soon. Critics say compliance was due to either because so many people committed or nuclear programs were so complicated and expensive. And some countries were privileged with nuclear umbrellas
The Ukraine Case
Gave up nukes under the rubric of Budapest Memorandum of 1994 and lost its land to Russian troublemakers
The Iran Case
Anti-nuclear deal struck out but US pulled out so far
North Korea
Endless processes of negotiations but the nuke is the only source of authority NK has
