populations size Flashcards
1
Q
immigration
A
- individuals move into a population and stay
2
Q
emigration
A
- individuals leave a population and do not return
3
Q
natality
A
- birth rate in animals or seed production in plants
4
Q
mortality
A
- death rate
5
Q
closed population
A
- a population with no new members being added other from natality and members are lost due to emigration and mortality
6
Q
open population
A
- new members are being added and members are lost due to emigration and mortality
7
Q
regulation of population
A
- with no limiting factors, a population will exponentially increase
- this causes environmental resistance (decrease of birth rates / immigration, increase of mortality / emigration)
- eventually population stabilises, this is the carrying capacity
- fluctuation will occur (annually and or seasonally)
- self-regulating
