- with no limiting factors, a population will exponentially increase
- this causes environmental resistance (decrease of birth rates / immigration, increase of mortality / emigration)
- eventually population stabilises, this is the carrying capacity
- fluctuation will occur (annually and or seasonally)
- self-regulating
