determining a population size Flashcards
1
Q
direct methods
A
- counting every single individual in a population
2
Q
census
A
- direct method
- populations large enough to see
- not too large of a population
- slow moving / stationary
- ## aerial photographs
3
Q
indirect methods
A
- using samples to estimate population sizes
4
Q
quadrat method
A
- indirect method
- uses a small measured area (quadrat)
- N = (no. in samp)(size of habitat) / size of quadrat
- should be distributed randomly
5
Q
mark-recapture
A
- samples are captured and marked, then released
- after some time they are recaptured and marker / remarked
- capture as many as possible
- P = (M x C) / R
- r (total number of marked in second sample)
- shortly, so no births can happen
- repeated
- no damage or change to function
- closed population
