Populations and evolution Flashcards
1
Q
Gene pool
A
All the alleles of all the genes of all the individuals in a population at a given time.
2
Q
Allelic frequency
A
The number of times an allele occurs within the gene pool
3
Q
Hardy-Weinberg principle
A
Calculates the frequencies of the alleles of a particular gene in a population
4
Q
Assumption of the HW principle
A
Proportion of dominant and recessive alleles of any genes in a population remains the same from one generation to the next.
5
Q
What conditions are required for the assumption to occur?
A
- No mutations
- Population is isolated = no flow of alleles
- No selection = equal chance for all alleles to be passed
- Large pop
- Random mating
6
Q
What is variation in the phenotype due to?
A
- Genetic
- Environmental factors
7
Q
Types of variation?
A
- Mutation
- Meiosis
- Random fertilisation of gametes
8
Q
Environmental influences
A
Affect the way the organism’s genes are expressed, genes do have limits tho. MOSTLY ENVIRONMENT.
- Climatic conditions
- Soil conditions
- pH
- Food availability
