Populations (18) Flashcards
What is a species?
group of organisms that can be interbred to produce fertile offspring
What is a gene pool?
all the alleles within a population
What is a population?
all the organisms of a particular species that live in the same place
What is allele frequency?
proportion of a certain allele within a gene pool
How is allele frequency written?
either as a decimal or percentage
What does the Hardy-Weinberg principle allow us to do?
allows us to estimate the frequency of alleles in a population, as well as if the allele frequency is changing over time
What are the 5 assumptions that the Hardy-Weinberg principle makes?
1) no mutations occur to create new alleles
2) no migration in or out the population
3) no selection so alleles are all equally passed on to the next generation
4) random mating
5) large population
What is the equation for allele frequency?
p + q = 1
What is the equation for genotype frequency?
p2 + 2pq + q2 = 1
What does p stand for?
dominant frequency
What does q stand for?
recessive frequency
What does p2 stand for?
frequency of homozygous dominant
What does q2 stand for?
frequency of homozygous recessive
What does 2pq stand for?
frequency of homozygous recessive
