Population Size and Regulation Flashcards
Do populations typically fluctuate?
Yes
Reasons for population fluctuations
Delays in reproduction, changing resource availability, interactions with other species, patterns of behavior
What is the allee effect?
There is a positive correlation between population size and individual fitness
Density-Dependent Factors include:
competition for food, shortages of food, alteration of chemical environment, increase in predation or parasites, disease may spread more easily
Density-Independent Factors include:
volcanic eruptions, weather, trampling, hurricanes, floods, etc
Two ways to document population size:
Census or mark and recapture study
Lincoln Peterson Index
N = Mn/x
Assumptions of Lincoln Peterson Index
Closed population, No B and D, No I and E, No tags falll off, equaly probability of being caught
