Intro to Ecology Flashcards
Defintion of Ecology
The investigation of the distribution and abundance of species and their interactions with the environment
Major Questions of Ecology
What causes a species to be common or rare? Why do the sizes of populations fluctuate? WHy are some species common in some places, but not others?
Population
All the individuals of a single species living together in time and space
The aim of population biology is to:
predict the number of individuals for a given population at a given time and place.
Applications of population biology:
Increasing yields in agriculture, optimizing population size in fisheries, wildlife management
Describe overharvesting in fisheries:
When all adults have been harvested, the young begin to be harvested, resulting in a large lag in births.
Where are cod fisheries?
Off the coast of New Foundland and Nova Scota, the Grand Banks
When was the moratorium on cod fishing enacted?
1992
What species stepped in to fill the ecological role of cod?
Shrimp and sharks
