Ecosystems Flashcards
Ecosystems
Biological community together with its physical environment
Ecosystems include:
primary producers, decomposers and detrivores, dead organic metter, herbivores, carnivores, physical environment
Energy is
the capacity to do work by moving matter against an opposite force
First Law of Thermodynamics
All energy is conserved. Energy is never destroyed, it is transformed.
Second law of thermodynamics
some energy is lost during transformation
Entropy is
the transformation of matter and energy to a more random state
How is energy captured for use in an ecosystem?
photosynthesis
Photosythesis
is the process by which light is converted into energy stored in the form of organic compounds
Primary productivity
all energy produced by photosynthesis
Biomass
weight of living material. usually expressed as dry weight per unit of area
Two phases of photosynthesis
Dark phase, and the light phase
Autotrophs
self-feeding organisms (green plants)
Chemoautotrophs
organisms that obtain their energy by oxidizing inorganic substances
