Population ; pyramids/graphs Flashcards
What is a ‘demographic transition model’?
shows prediction of how countries will develop and how it will affect the birthrate and deathrate overtime.
Describe the first stage of the DTM.
high birthrate, high deathrate, low population.
Describe the second stage of the DTM.
high birthrate, deathrate rapidly decreases, population increases.
Describe the third stage of the DTM.
birthrate slowly decreases, deathrate slowly decreases, population rapidly increases.
Describe the fourth stage of the DTM.
low birthrate, steady deathrate, peak population.
Describe the fifth stage of the DTM.
this stage is predicted. birthrate falls under deathrate, steady deathrate, population decreases.
What is a population pyramid?
a graph that shows the structure of a population by comparing relative numbers of people in different age groups.
What information do population pyramids give?
give info on birthrate, deathrate and life expectancy.
tells how many dependants there are. (below 15 years old and over 65 years old).
Describe how a population pyramid looks on LEDCs.
higher number of dependants. pyramid will have a wide base.
sides will decrease as fewer people reach old age.
Describe how a population pyramid looks on MEDCs.
have a growing number of elderly dependants.
pyramid will have straight sides or a barrel shape.
pyramid is much taller as more people reach old age.
