population part 3 Flashcards
Population distribution and density is uneven in Dublin
South Dublin
The Dublin mountains prevent the city from expanding south.
Settlement is almost completely absent in mountains - exposed to strong winds and winter frosts.
Population distribution and density is uneven in Dublin
North Dublin
North Dublin has a low population desnity because much of farmland in North Dublin is used for market gardening - supplies apcuty with fresh fruit and vegetables.
Dublin airport is also located here and prevents Dublin City from sprawling north
Population distribution and density is uneven in Dublin
Dublin city
High population density
city centre has many multi-story apartment blocks
high density terraced housing - Drumcondra
during the day, people travel into city for work
Population distribution and density is uneven in Dublin
expansion
expands westwards and towns such as tallaghr and clondalkin have grown as a result
Low population density can lead to..
- Low marriage rates
- Abandonment of land
- Economic and political isolation
Low population densities: West of Ireland
Low marriage rates
Before 1930s - matchmakers arranged marriages
–> guaranteed eldest son a wife
Matchmakers declined in Ireland.
- -> girls emigrated to Britain
- -> girls with a secondary education went to Dublin to work as teachers, civil servants, etc.
Women did not like idea of staying on a small, poor rural farm
Bachelor farmers grew in the West
–> reduced when free education came in during 1960s
Low population densities: West of Ireland
Abandonment of land
Farms very small
–> difficult to make a living
Many farmers’ children now have third level education
–> can gain jobs in areas other than agriculture
Small farms in west now used for forestry, tourism, etc.
Low population densities: West of Ireland
Economic and political isolation
Peripheral location of the west means it is far away from markets.
(Dublin, EU)
Infrastructure
- Underdeveloped
- Unattractive for industry
Fewer employment opportunities
Low population densities: Mali
Low marriage rates
Agriculture is very difficult - young men look for work in cities
Marriage rate falls - low birth rates
Low population densities: Mali
Abandonment of land
Desertification makes agriculture impossible
- high temperatures
- overgrazing
- lack of rainfall
This causes rural-urban migration
–> land is abandoned
Low population densities: Mali
Political and economic isolation
Mali is land locked - goods must be transported by land through other countries
Companies find it difficult to invest
Infrastructure underdeveloped
High populationdensity: Kolkata
India - 1 billion people
Kolkata (Calcutta) - 14 million people
Rural-to-urban migration
People move to cities to find work and better services
Problems in Kolkata
Overcrowding:
Shanty towns called bustees
Homes made of cardboard, metal, wood, plastic
Pavement dwellers:
Many migrants live on streets
Lack of open space:
Bustees expanding into country side
Poor sanitation:
Sewage pipes overflow and contaminate water supply
Lack of clean water:
Shortage of clean water in bustees
Spreads diseases
Low population densities: Hong Kong
Colony of Great Britain until 1997
Population density - 6,300 per km2
Wealthy region - industrial sector
Land not suitable for living on
Problems in Hong Kong
Overcrowding:
Limited available land
Intensively used - cramped conditions
Shortage of clean water:
Pressure on water supply
Water polluted by sewage and waste
Pollution:
Overcrowding leads to noise and air pollution
High rise buildings:
Eyesore + blocks out light
Lack of open space:
Land reclaimed from sea (polders)
Shortage of open space in CBD
Little sunlight
