Earth Flashcards
The two types of crust?
Continental crust and oceanic crust.
Layers of the earth?
Inner core, Outer core, Mantle, Crust.
What lies in the mantle?
Molten rock (magma)
What are the earth’s main plates?
Eurasian plate, Indo-Australian plate, Antarctic plate, Pacific plate, North American plate, Nazca plate, South American plate and African plate.
What was the original land mass called?
Pangaea.
Plate Boundaries
Divergent (constructive plates), Convergent (Destructive plates) and Transform (passive plates).
DC, CD and T.
theory of plates separating
continental drift
what causes the plates to move?
convection currents within the mantle cause the plates to move.

divergent constructive plates
divergent/constructive plate boundaries are when two plates separate. Magma rises to fill the gap. Volcanoes and mid ocean ridges are formed.
convergent/destructive plates
convergent/destructive plate boundaries are when two plates collide.
Volcanoes and fold mountains are formed.
Passive/transform plates
passive/transform plate boundaries are when two plates slide by/push past each other. Earthquakes occur.
Mid-ocean ridge
A mid-ocean ridge is formed when two plates separate under water. As plates separate the magma goes upwards and cools when it hits the sea water. When it coolds, it makes a new ocean floor. The ocean floor builds up to make ridges and mountain.s An example of a mid-ocean ridge is the mid-Atlantic Ridge.
