Population growth Flashcards
What is the difference between an open and closed population?
open population allows immigration and emigration, closed does not, so population is only determined by birth and mortality
what does lamba represent in the geometric population growth model?
the geometric rate of increase (mean number of offspring per individual)
What are the 2 assumptions of the geometric population growth model
birth rate is always greater than death rate, and birth and death rates are not effected by population size
Give 2 reasons why population growth can’t be modelled geometrically
resources deplete when populations get high, and animals must mature before reproducing
Give 3 assumptions of the exponential population growth model
no immigration/emigration, no death due to limited resources, population only due to birth rate and death rate
