population groups Flashcards
what are the different population groups?
- males and females (gender)
- indigenous and non-indigenous
- high and low SES
- those living within and outside of Australia’s major cities
what is an example of a socio-cultural factor?
what does it do to the health status?
Poor housing conditions can result in a higher prevalence in lung cancer in indigenous Australians, because over-crowding housing conditions result in poor sanitation and air quality, which create a higher risk of respiratory diseases.
provide 2 examples of how health status of indigenous people compares to the health status of non-indigenous people
1- indigenous Australians have a lower life expectancy than those that are non- indigenous
2- indigenous Australians have a higher rate of obesity due to their diet which may lead to cardiovascular disease influencing the mortality rate, compared to those that are non- indigenous.
provide 2 examples of how health status of males compares to the health status of females.
1- Males are more likely to engage in risky behavior due to a hormone called testosterone, which results in a higher rate of injury compared to women.
2- Men are less likely to seek medical assistance then females because of the stigma they believe that surrounds seeking help. This attitude has led to late diagnosis of diseases such as cardiovascular disease.
