Population Flashcards
What does a fat barrel shaped pyramid suggest
The country is developed
What does a pyramid shape suggest about a country
Delevoping
Name 3 developing countries
Chad, Niger, Botswana
Name 3 developed countries
Italy, France, Canada
If a country is developed what will the order usually be of br, dr, le and imr
Birth rate - low
Death rate - low
Infant mortality rate - low
Life expectancy- high
What would the four things usually be in developing
Birth rate - high
Death rate - high
Infant mortality - high
Life expectancy - low
6 physical factors affecting population distribution and density
1) Relief = mountainous regions such as Nepal are sparsely populated due to hard to build on steep ground.
2) Climate = too hot (Sahara desert) or too cold places are sparsely because day to day life is harder and lack of rain = drought = hard to farm.
3) soil = Ganges valley is densely populated as there’s fertile soil to grow food to eat or sell.
4) natural resources = NE USA is densely populated as there’s lots of coal so people move for industry/wealth/trade.
5) location = coastal areas like Rio are denser than inland due to history = next to harbour to trade worldwide.
6) natural hazards = Haiti is sparsely populated as earthquakes destroy livelihood
Human factors affecting distribution and density
1) government investment = Brazil golden triangle is densely populated as government investment will make living standards better so more job opportunities, better transport links, better housing and more things to do like shopping.
2) politics = Zimbabwe is sparsely populated due to lack of stable government and corruption so people will feel their rights will not be looked after. People want democracies.
3) communications = Silicon Valley is densely populated because it has good communications such as roads, railways and airports which attracts industries due to ease of business. Easy to move goods around, trade abroad and workers can access.
4) education = Germany is densely populated as it has a strong education system, many families will want their children to get good qualifications and a better future for their children.
5) healthcare = uk is densely populated as it has the NHS which is an advanced and free healthcare system which attracts people as it can allow them to live a longer life if anything goes wrong.
6) industry = Great Plains in USA is sparsely populated as the main industry is farming which means a lot of land is required to support a few people.
6 reasons for high dr
1) lack of good sanitation = human waste contaminates drinking water = water bourne diseases such as cholera.
2) natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes could cause drought therefore lack of water supply.
3) widespread diseases such as malaria kill large amounts of population.
4) people cannot afford to pay for treatment/medicines needed.
5) lack of healthcare facilities/ remote areas far from healthcare.
6) food shortages/lack of balanced diet.
6 reasons for low death rate
1) good elderly care systems/pensions - people are looked after when they rise in age.
2) improved sanitation
3) disease declined
4) better food supply/nutrition
5) medical advances such as surgical procedures and vaccinations
6) improved living standards
6 reasons for high birth rate
1) due to poor care system people have more kids so they look after parents when they’re old.
2) people have children so they can work on farms and make money for the family.
3) many people believe in no sex before marriage but early marriage is common.
4) some religions may be against contraception.
5) many families want a make to work and make money so families will keep trying to get a male.
6) high Infant mortality and poor healthcare can mean people having more babies so there’s more chance of survival.
6 reasons for low birth rate
1) people are more materialistic - would rather spend money on holidays and items rather than having a child
2) children are very expensive and up to their 18th birthday one child can cost a family about £250000
3) many women want to put their career firsts and would rather have kids later.
4) there’s a wider use and easier access to abortions
5) good sex education - free condoms and pupils taught about safe sex in school.
6) contraceptive pill introduced in 1961 so more access to preventing pregnancy
4 low infant mortality reasons
1) Women are healthier during pregnancy - eating correctly and not putting stress on body.
2) developed countries have better healthcare in particular better anti and post natal care
3) diseases could attack immune system of babies but developed countries have less diseases.
4) women are less likely to give birth prematurely as there’s better healthcare and women are looking after themselves more.
What is gdp and give explain how it shows development
Total money produced by goods + services in that country (per person) and it shows the country has put money into developing industries and therefore jobs. Also shows country has a strong education to train workers.
How does energy use per person show development
- Shows the country has invested in technology and factories to produce electricity.
- Shows a materialistic lifestyle where people are using lots of tech.
