Spams could suggest his son will die in a horrifying way.

The word bandaged is a word we would relate to suffering a wound. The sellotape is wrapped but ‘bandaged’ covering her pain but also the fact she has damaged herself from letting her son go.

This similie shows the son’s excitment at leaving home perhaps a childish image, as well suggesting he hasn’t got realistic expectations. Poem is trying to say war isn’t experienced at those who are at war, but those who are at home. Here son can only see postives of war but mother only sees death, the mother is intoxicated. His mother is criticial in his desire to go because its like being drunk, society has caused young men to think is glorious like a treasure chest

This is a dramatic monologue, emphasizing the pain caused from the often ignored mother and also emphasizing how the son isn’t there he is at war or dead. The poem is written in Free verse, enjambment and Different stanza length which have a combined effect to create a chaotic structure , reflecting the chaotic conflict on those at home, their life is a chaos and lacks control, as they have terrifying thoughts on loved ones.
