Q

What is the structure of the poem?

A

The poem has a tight structure every one of the 7 stanzas have 6 lines per stanza, this tight structure reflects the type control as the military and its expectations and this is what this person shall do. But it is contrasted with free verse showing the pilot wants to have freedom the pilot wants to have.

Q

What does the quote ‘Her father embarked at sunrise… with a shaven head full of incarnations’ suggest?

A

Sunrise is a image of nature but also links to Japan, which is known as the land of the rising sun, it is a military flag, in this one image of sunrise we see the power of nature and the power of man conflicting each other. All the soldiers have been brainwashed into thinking it is honorable but it is not, it creates inner conflict

Q

What does the quote ‘A tuna, the dark prince, muscular, dangerous’ suggest?

A

The most powerful character is the tuna fish, all of the adjectives create a threatening intense powerful image and the poems first full stop is here , this suggests despite the best efforts of the pilot the tuna fish is trully powerful. Power belongs to nature, mans effort are futile, this causes the pilot to turn around and return home, there is much more to the world than he perceives, human life is unimportant when contrasted to nature.

Q

What does the quote ‘Safe…yes, grandfathers boat - safe’ suggest?

A

The repetition of ‘safe’ not only repetition but the structural decision to place the word and the end of the stanza 2. The repetition hints at the mindset of the pilot, he is remembering the times as a child he waited for his father for a safe return, symbolizing the pilot wants a safe return.

Q

What does the quote ‘He must of wondered what has the best way to die’ suggest?

A

This is a very tragic ending to the poem, the personal conflict verses the national conflict, he has made this choice and the pilot has find himself metaphorically deas, he wonders if a kamikaze death would be better then one emotional death, this shows how the pilots choice to return is futile, his decision coming home is like a kamikaze mission itself.
