What does the Quote ‘Wind that knifes us… mad gusts… acts in ranks’ suggest?
The overwhelming use of Personification presents the idea that nature is more deadly than all the soliders. The soliders are fighting two battles, the bullets are seen less deadly than the Cold. The soliders feel the weather is against them. The use of ‘knife us’ is unexpected as we expect the fight to between soldiers, emphasizing the vulnerability of the soldiers, they are exposed to the true horrors of war. ‘Mad’ suggests how violent and uncontroable but defencless the soliders are.
What does the quote ‘But nothing happens’ suggest?
The poem ends in the refrain it starts with. The repetition of ending creates a cylical structure, highlighiting futitliy of the war, nothing is being achieved, they are slowly dying. The soldiers have faced the consequences that their commanders failed to change the conduct of the war. Owen is being ironic, the men have just died a slow terrible death because of futility of war.
What does these quotes suggest What are we doing here?…Is it that we are dying….For love of God is dying.
Owen abondened religion and God, he rejected the church, people are losing their relgious beliefs when exposed to true horrors of war. However dying could reflect dying to save sins for humanity life Jesus.
What is the structure of the Poem?
Each stanza begins with a blunt powerful sentence, with emotive language, which is then followed by highly emotive vocab choices with high drama, then ends with a anti-climatic sentence (very little takes place) Owen wants his readers to emphasis with how the soliders felt , everything is tense and seems to be building, to a climax, only to end with nothing happens. This is the same of each stanza.
