Polymers Flashcards
what is a polymer?
A polymer are all plastics
what makes weak forces in polymers?
Weak forces are caused by individual tangled chains of polymers which are free to slide over each other
what makes strong forces in polymers?
Strong Forces are caused by cross linked chains, which holds the chains firmly together
what are thermosoftening polymers?
Thermosoftening polymers have individual tangled chains which means it is weak. This means that the plastic is easy to melt and when it cools hardens into a new shape, it can do this as many times as you like
what is a thermosetting polymer?
Thermosetting polymers have crosslinks, these hold the chains together in a solid structure and does not melt when heated. They are strong, hard and rigid
how are low density polymers made and what are they used for?
Low density polythene is made by heating the ethene to about 200’C under high pressure. Its flexible and is used for bags and bottles
how are high density polymers made and what are they used for?
High density polythene is made at a lower temperature and pressure (with a catalyst). Its more rigid and is used for water tanks and drainpipes
