New Materials Flashcards
what are smart materials?
Smart materials behave differently depending on the conditions
give an example of a smart material
Nitinol a shape memory alloy can be bent and twisted like rubber but of bent to much it stays bent. If it is heated above a certain temperature
give an example of a smart material
Nitinol a shape memory alloy can be bent and twisted like rubber but of bent to much it stays bent. If it is heated above a certain temperature it goes back to a remembered shape
what is a nanoparticle?
A nanoparticle is a very small particle containing a few hundred atoms
what is fullerenes?
Fullerenes are molecules of carbon, shaped like hollow balls or closed tubes. The carbon atoms are arranged in hexagonal rings. Different fullerenes contain different numbers of carbon atoms
what are nanotubes?
Nanotubes are fullerenes joined together, they are very small hollow carbon tubes, a few nanometres across. The covalent bonds make the tubes very strong.
what is nanoscience?
Nanoscience is the new uses of the particles being used for a wide range of purposes
give some uses of nanoparticles
- They could help make new industrial catalysts
- New cosmetics
- Stronger, lighter building materials
