Energy Transfers in Reactions Flashcards
what is an exothermic reaction?
An exothermic reaction is one which transfers energy to the surroundings, usually in the form of heat and usually shown in a rise in temperature
name some examples of exothermic reactions
Combustion, neutralisation and most oxidation reaction
what is an endothermic reaction?
An endothermic reaction is one which takes energy in from the surroundings, usually in the form of heat and is usually shown by a fall in temperature
name some examples of endothermic reactions
Thermal decomposition and ice packs
can reversible reactions be endothermic and exothermic?
A reversible reaction is both endothermic and exothermic, if it is one in one direction it will be the other in the other direction. The energy absorbed in a endothermic reaction is equal to the energy released during the exothermic reaction
what does anhydrous mean?
Anhydrous means without water
what does hydrated mean?
Hydrated means with water
