-ate is bigger than -ite
any compound with the suffix -ate has one more oxygen than the -ite counterpart
ex) nitrite (NO2-) vs nitrate (NO3-)
hypo- is smaller than -ite
think hypo- meaning low or under; the compound with hypo- as the prefix will have one LESS oxygen than its -ite counterpart
ex) hypochlorite (ClO-) vs chlorite (ClO2-)
per- is bigger than -ate
per- prefix compounds have one more oxygen than their -ate counterparts
ex) perchlorate (ClO4-) vs chlorate (ClO3-)
hypo- < -ite < -ate < per-
ex) ClO- < ClO2- < ClO3- < ClO4-
hypochlorite, chlorite, chlorate, perchlorate
