What is a political spectrum?

What are third parties?
Smaller political parties that influence politics by promoting ideas that were first unpopular.(Have never won presidency)
What is the left wing?
The left wing is often considered individualist (or libertarian) on social/cultural issues and communitarian (or populist) on economic issues
What is the right wing?
The right wing is often considered communitarian (or populist) on social/cultural issues and individualist (or libertarian) on economic issues
What are Single Issue parties?
.-parties that form to rpomote a single issue that are social, economic or moral (usually don’t last long)

What is Communism?
an extreme left political ideology which advocates a society where all the natural and capital resources are owned by the state (country). This promotes common ownership for the benefit of all citizens.
What is Socialism?
left political ideology which promotes social justice by taking ownership of companies, thus eliminating social inequalities.
What is Liberalism?
a center political ideology which promotes individual freedom and a limited role of the state (government).
What is Conservatism?
is a right political ideology which advocates the preservation of what is best in society and opposes radical changes. It tries to favor tradition and traditional values and stays away from innovation and change.
What is fascism?
is an extreme right political ideology which advocates an authoritarian hierarchical government. This ideology is based on a centralized government (usually controlled by a dictator) which takes control of businesses and which represses criticism or opposition
What were the 1st two political parties?
■ Federalists- Alexander Hamilton and John Adams, wanted a strong federal government, party eventually faded out
■ Democratic Republicans- Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, thought the federal government was getting too much power, party split into Democrats and Whigs
What are Ideological parties?
-parties that from to support a particular philosophy or idea
-ex -Socialists Labor Party and Communist Party USA believe that free enterprise should be replaced by one in which the government owns business
-Libertarian Party want to cut the size of the federal government and increase personal freedoms
What are independent candidates?
-A candidate that runs for something that is not officially assisted with a political party
- form around leaders with strong personalities (usually don’t last long)

-Third party candidates must obtain a large number of voter signatures to be placed on the ballot

To facilitate collective action in the electoral process aka parties make it easier for voters to form groups that will vote in certain ways

Elections held to choose who will run in the later general election.
