Q

Describe eutrophication

A
  1. Fertilizer is sprayed on fields to make plants grow better
  2. Nitrates and phosphates left on the ground dissolve into water in the soil
  3. Any of the nitrates and phosphates that aren’t soaked up go into surrounding rivers and streams etc. (also if it rains heavily they’ll be washed into them)
  4. The presence of extra nitrates and phosphates in water sources is called eutrophication
  5. Eutrophication encourages water plants including algae to grow
  6. Algae form dense mats on the water, blocking out sunlight
  7. Plants that don’t get enough light die
  8. Decaying organisms in water use up oxygen to break down
  9. The amount of oxygen in water decreases
  10. Animals living in the water can’t get enough oxygen so they die
