What does article 1 refer to?
India , that is, Bharat shall be a union of states.

What did Dr B R Ambedkar say in this regard
‘Union of states’ has been prefered over FEDERATION OF STATES because the Indian federation is not because of an agreement between the states like America.the Indian states have no right to secede from the Indian federation.
According to article 1 ,the territory of India includes
- States of India
- union territories if India
- the territories which may be acquired by India in future.
Being a sovereign country India can acquire territories by?
- Cession
- Occupation(hitherto not occupied by any ruler)
- Conquest
Under article 2 what power has the parliament been given
The power to
- Establish new states
- Admit new states
The term state in this regard refers to territories which are not a part of India.
Article 3 authorizes the parliament to?
- Create new states by merging two states , by bifurcation or by added a new region to an existing state or however.
- Altering the name of the state
- Altering the boundaries of a state.
- Altering the area of a state , i.e either increasing the area or decreasing the area.
What conditions are laid down by the constitution in reference to article 3?
- A Bill contemplating the above changes can be introduced in parliament only upon the recommendation of the president.
- Before recommending such a bill the president has to refer the Bill to the concerned state legislature, which will be allowed to express its views within a given period of time. However the advice given by the state are non binding.
In case of union territories no intimation needs to be given to them.
What have the Indian states been described as
Indian states have been described as an indestructible union of destructible states.
In case of a deadlock between the two houses of the parliament what happens to Bill that carries any changes with reference to article 3 ?
It gets defeated and there is no scope for a joint sitting of parliament.
Article 4?
It is an enabling article which automatically makes changes to schedules 1 and 4 whenever changes are made to articles 2 and 3.
What is the content of schedules 1 and 4?
Schedule 1 : names of the states and union territories and the extent of their boundaries
Schedule 4 : allocation of seats to Rajya Sabha from each state
