Before 1988-Selection The Tripartite System
1944 Education Act children were selected and allocated based on efforts and and abilities identified by the 11+
-Grammar schools
offered academic curriculum and access to non manual jobs and higher education. For students who passed the 11+ mainly ere middle class
-Secondary modern schools
non academic practical curriculum and access to manual work for pupils who failed 11+ mainly working class
Rather then promoting meritocracy tripartite system it reproduced inequality by channelling the social classes into into different schools also reproduced gender inequality as girls had to score higher to get into grammar schools.
it was legistamised through the idea that
