POF Basics Flashcards

1
Q

What are the Factors Affecting Lift?

A

AOA - Increase in AOA will increase Lift

Camber - Will increase lift due to greater pressure difference from wing curvature.

surface area - Will increase lift.

Surface condition - smoother aerofoil better lifting capability.

Speed - Will increase lift due to more pronounced Bernoulli affect/faster airflow

Density of air - Will Increase Lift as performance is increased.

Aspect ratio - less induced drag

Q

What are the factors affecting climb performance?

A

Weight - Increase in weight will increase the RCW, therefore more thrust is required, lowering the ROC but AOC decreases.

Flaps increase the amount of drag on the aircraft, therefore decreasing the ROC and AOC.

Manoeuvring - More drag. decreased ROC & AOC.

Power - Increases thrust, so increased ROC and AOC

Speed - Decreases ROC and AOC unless at correct speed.

Altitude - Decreased ROC and AOC

Wind, HW will increase AOC. TW will decrease AOC.
Density - Increase ROC and AOC.

Q

What are the factors affecting descent performance (glide)?

A

Weight - Increase in weight will increase the FCW, thus increasing the ROD. AOD is not affected.

Flaps - More drag so increased ROD and AOD.

Manoeuvring - More drag so increased ROD and AOD.

Power - Increased performance, so decreased ROD and AOD.

Speed - Increased ROD and AOD.

Altitude -

Wind - HW will increase AOD, TW will decrease AOD.

Density -

Q

What is a moment?
What is a force couple?

A

A moment is generated when a force is applied around a pivot point.
A couple describes 2 forces acting in parallel opposite each other.

Q

What is newtons second law of motion (and turning example)?

A

Newtons second law - An external force applied to an object is proportional to the product of the mass and acceleration of the object.

(Steep turns will require greater CP, as acceleration is greater due to a greater rate of turn vs medium turn).

Q

What is newtons third law of motion (and turning example)?

A

Newtons third law of motion - A force acting on an object will create an equal and opposite acting reaction.

(during a max rate turn, centrifugal reaction and weight will contribute to a higher load factor)
