Commonality - Character

A

Speaker feels frightened, lost and isolated. Feels like she is losing he sense of self.
Quotes - “My tongue shedding its skin like a snake” simile - changing losing her sense of identity.
“Where do you come from? strangers ask. Originally? And I hesitate” SS draws attention that speaker no longer knows what to identify with

Painful experiences.

A

Trauma of leaving home for someplace unknown.
“My brothers cried, one of them bawling, Home, Home” Word choice of bawling.
“I stared at the eyes of a blind toy.” WC of blind connotes an inability to see. In this case unable to see what future holds.

Word choice/imagery to convey theme.

A

Isolation, loss of identity.
“My tongue shedding its skin like a snake” Simile - loss of identity.
“Your accent wrong” Isolation WC of wrong suggests different and not as it should be. Showing isolation as speaker was different to everyone else.

A

Relationship between speaker and their new surroundings/family.
“Corners which seem familiar, leading to unimagined pebble dashed estates.” WC of seem and unimagined connote confusion and strangeness.
“Seeing your brother swallow a slug, feeling only a skelf of shame.” Relationship between her and her brother. Metaphor skelf - tiny amount.
