Paragraph 1 introduction of Jack
‘“I ought to be chief,” said Jack with simple arrogance, “because I’m
chapter chorister and head boy. I can sing C sharp.”’
Jacks thirst for power is immediately shown, word choice of arrogance shows his belief that he is better than the rest.
Jacks name meaning supplanter – to take over foreshadowing events later in the novel.
Paragraph 2 character developing
“Then dog-like, uncomfortably on all fours yet unheeding his discomfort, he stole forward five yards and stopped.”
Jack becoming increasingly animalistic ergo savage, we of doglike shows his animalistic and savage intent foreshadowing his break into savagery- at this point he is still fairly civil. WC of uncomfortable shows Jack is not yet comfortable with savagery.
Paragraph 3 rejection of civility
“Jack smacked Piggy’s head. Piggy’s glasses flew off and tinkled on the rocks. Piggy cried out in terror” symbolism of glasses is intelligence Jack breaking them shows his reject of it.
Paragraph 4 Jack leaving group
‘“I’m going off by myself. He can catch his own pigs. Anyone who wants to hunt when I do can come too.”’ Shows his reject of society and now becomes a complete savage enticing others to join him on his savage embarks.
Paragraph 5 complete savagery
Piggy is killed. “See? See? That’s what you’ll get! I meant that! There isn’t a tribe for you any more! The conch is gone—” Exclamation marks show Jacks pleasure at the death of Piggy, further emphasised by repeated short sentences. Shows his complete descent into savagery death of another being.
Theme shown through Jack
By creating us dislike this character Golding makes the novel more memorable and conveys the theme of the savage intent of mankind.
