What is the theme of a poem
It is what it’s trying to convey of the human experience. What the author hopes the reader realises. It is the central idea, subject or underlying thought.
What is the form and structure of the poem
How it looks on the page. the line lengths, rhyme, rhythm, stanzas
What is rhythm and what does it help with
The beat in a poem. It is the repetition or recurrence of stress. The function of rhythm is to emphasise or endorse the meaning of the words in a poem
What is the mood of the poem
The atmosphere the poet creates within his particular work. How we are made to feel as the reader
What is the tone of the poem
The writers attitude towards the subject
What are some examples of tone
Critical, sarcastic, forceful, sincere loving, joyful, mocking etc (adjectives)
What influences the mood, tone and atmosphere of the poem
The poets word choice, imagery used, rhyme and rhythm, sound effects (alliteration, assonance, onomatopoeia),
What is imagery
The use of word pictures or images that usually appeal to our senses but they may also appeal to the heart or mind
What is the intention/ message of the poem refer to
Why has the poet written this poem
What are examples of intentions and messages for writing poems
To persuade, to defend, to praise, to warn, to protest, to evoke sympathy etc
What is a hyperbole used for
It is an exaggerated statement. It emphasises the fact stated
What is a rhetorical question used for
Used to emphasise the fact stated. It draws attention to the statement as it makes the user stop and think
What is the use of an apostrophe
To address an inanimate object or an absent person. It is used to create a sense of intimacy or the object addressed seem closer and more real. When addressing objects it personifies them.
What is pathos user for
Quality in writing that excites pity or sadness
What is personification used for
attribute human qualities to a thing or quality. It makes the scene more vivid or the action more forceful
