Pneumonia Flashcards
What is pneumonia?
- An inflammatory condition of the lung where the alveolar fills with consolidation and exudation
4 Stages of Pneumonia
Consolidation - Occurs in the first 24 hours. Vascular engorgement.
Red Hepatisation - 2-3 days. Massive exudation occurs. Liver like consistency.
Grey Hepatisation - 4-6 days. Progressive disintegration of red blood cells.
Resolution - 6+ days. Exudate undergoes progressive digestion and is reabsorbed or coughed up.
Types of Pneumonia
CAP - Community Acquired Pneumonia
HAP - Hospital Acquired Pneumonia
HCAP.- Health Care Acquired Pneumonia
VAP - Ventilator Acquired Pneumonia
Signs and symptoms of Pneumonia
- Fever
- Malaise
- Chest pain
- Dyspnoea
- Coughing (productive and non-productive)
- Fatigue
- Rapid HR
Medical diagnosis of Pneumonia
- High temp
- Increase HR (>100bpm)
- Crackles on ausc
- Decreased breath sounds or bronchial breath sounds (indicates consolidation)
Diagnostic tests for Pneumonia
- CXR
- Auscultation
- CT scan
- Blood/sputum test
Physio treatment for Pneumonia
Non Productive - Positioning, positions of ease, VQ matching, mobilisation
Productive - Positioning, percussion, shakes/vibs, ACBT, AD, breathing exercises, adjuncts, suctioning, nippy clearway, postural drainage
