What is pneumonia?

A
  • An inflammatory condition of the lung where the alveolar fills with consolidation and exudation

4 Stages of Pneumonia

A

Consolidation - Occurs in the first 24 hours. Vascular engorgement.

Red Hepatisation - 2-3 days. Massive exudation occurs. Liver like consistency.

Grey Hepatisation - 4-6 days. Progressive disintegration of red blood cells.

Resolution - 6+ days. Exudate undergoes progressive digestion and is reabsorbed or coughed up.

  • Fever
  • Malaise
  • Chest pain
  • Dyspnoea
  • Coughing (productive and non-productive)
  • Fatigue

A
  • High temp
  • Increase HR (>100bpm)
  • Crackles on ausc
  • Decreased breath sounds or bronchial breath sounds (indicates consolidation)

Physio treatment for Pneumonia

A

Non Productive - Positioning, positions of ease, VQ matching, mobilisation

Productive - Positioning, percussion, shakes/vibs, ACBT, AD, breathing exercises, adjuncts, suctioning, nippy clearway, postural drainage
