What is bronchiectasis?

A
  • Condition is idopathic
  • Permanent abnormal dilation of the bronchi
  • Fills with sputum - makes them prone to infection

How does Bronchiectasis occur?

A
  • Impaired mucociliary clearance leads to accumulation of clearance of secretions
  • Secretions lead to infection
  • Infection leads to increased mucus production, increase inflammation and decreased MC clearance
  • Excessive inflammatory response leads to tissue damage
  • Tissue damage leads to dilated bronchi including impaired MC clearance and loss of cilliated epithelium
