PEEP Flashcards

Q

PEEP - What is it?

A
  • When patient is on ventilation, it becomes difficult to keep all of the alveoli open. The air takes the path of least resistance (upper) and favours areas which are already open.
  • Smaller alveoli are vulnerable to collapse on expiration
  • Applying a positive pressure at the end of expiration, it assists in splinting open the alveoli so they don’t reach the critical stage.
