Clinical manifestations of pneumonia
sudden fever, chills, shortness of breath, purulent sputum, productive cough, pleuritic chest pain, adventitious breath sounds
What symptoms ma indicate hypoxia?
sudden onset of confusion
What blood tests would you expect a pneumonia pt to get
ABG (initially norm/decreases PaO2, mild resp alkalosis. Later decreased PaO2, respirtory acidosis
How can you tell a pt has bacterial pneumonia on a chest xray?
White in otherwise clear lung cavity
When would you use antibiotics for pneumonia
bacterial, DO CULUTRE FIRST TO ENSURE HAVE RIGHT DRUG
How long before the antibiotics start to work?
48-72 hours. Abnormal findings may last up to 7 days after starting. Chest xray done in 6-8 weeks to ensure resolution
Benefits of mobility for pneumonia pts
improved diaphragm movement/chest expansion, mobilization of secretions, prevention of venous stasis
What are the two types of peumonia vaccines
PCV13 protects against 13 types, single dose.
PPSV23 Pnejmovax 23. Also protects aginst 13 diffeernt. Givento pts with predispostion, can receive more than 1 dose.
How to tell if you’re getting a quality SPo2 reading.
SPO2 pleth (waveform) should be crisp and matches the QRS
