Pneumonia Flashcards
what causes pneumonia?
streptococcus pneumonia
Haemophilus influenzae
Moraxella catarrhalis
staphylococcus aureus
gram stain of staphylococcus aureus
gram positive cocci in clusters
gram stain of streptococcus pneumonia
gram positive diplococci
gram stain of Haemophilus influenzae
gram negative coccobacillus
what is pneumonia?
infection of alveoli in lungs
symptoms of pneumonia
cough - dry or thick sputum
difficulty breathing
fever
tachycardia
chest pain
sweating + shivering
mechanism of infection of pneumonia
normal flora of upper respiratory tract can cause lower respiratory tract infection (normally sterile)
treatment of mild/moderate pneumonia
amoxicillin
(doxycycline is penicillin allergy)
treatment of severe pneumonia
IV co-amoxiclav AND doxycycline
(cephalosporin + tetracycline if penicillin allergy) - protein synthesis inhibitors
rest
fluids
What are the virulence factors of strep pneumoniae?
- polysaccharide capsule
- pili attached to bacteria - binds to epithelial cells of respiratory tract
