PN839 Incidents involving solar panels Flashcards
What is it essential to obtain on arrival at large commercial, industrial solar farms?
Site specific plans to determine the location of the inverter and ascertain the voltage (V) or current (Amp) being produced.
Who would you request for advice at the earliest opportunity to attend a Solar panel incident?
Attendance of an authorised person from the relevant power generating/distribution company and system installer for advice.
If the mains fuse has been removed, will the power to the building is still be energised?
Yes
Failure to isolate the direct current inverter, may mean that the power to the building is still energised even when the Mains fuse has been removed by
the authorised person.
What voltage can be produced by Solar panels?
The electrical current produced can be at high voltages in excess of 1000v DC.
Why is the inverter’s location key?
The inverter’s location is key as it will provide a switch to isolate power.
Where will the isolator often be found?
In loft spaces.
What should the IC consider using at this type of incident?
Consider the use of electrical gloves.
Why is appliances siting important?
Appliances should be sited to ensure there is room for aerial appliances in case external access to
roof is required and to avoid the risk from falling materials.
Would you request an HMEPO at this type of incident?
Yes.
Due to the risk of fluid leaking from batteries etc.
How do solar panels work?
1 Sunlight hits the solar panel which excites electrons in the panel creating a direct current
2 This direct current(DC ) flows into an inverter box which converts it into an AC current.
3 This is fed into the premises consumer unit for use around the house.
4 Any surplus energy is fed into battery banks for storage or back into the National Grid.
