What are mood disorders, + why are they significant?
psychological conditions involving abnormal elevation or lowering of mood,associated with psychiatric disability + suicide. Primarily disorders of emotion rather than cognition, can occur with anxiety, psychosis, + somatic symptoms.
Most common affective disorder ?
Unipolar depression. Prevalant in 5 % of Population. More common in women. Typical onset 25-35 years
First two questions that should be asked during a consultation ?
1) During the past month, have you often been bothered by feeling down, depressed, or hopeless?”
2) During the past month, have you often been bothered by having little interest or pleasure in doing things
What are common symptoms ?
. Feeling sad, empty,hopeless
. Losing interest,
Two types of depression ?
1) Reactive depression (Most common)
2) Endogeneous depression (Less common)
symptoms of depression ?
feeling guilt
Negative thoughts
low self esteem
GI disturbances
weight loss
What does the monoamine hypothesis suggest causes depression?
Low levels of monoamide transmitters e.g Serotonin, Noradrenaline and Dopamine cause Depression
Main monoamines involved in this hypothesis ?
Serotonin, Noradrenaline, Dopamine
How do antidepressants support the monoamine hypothesis ?
They increase monoamine levels in the brain, improving mood.
Which drug class blocks serotonin reuptake to raise its levels?
SSRI’s (Selevtive Serotonin reuptake inhibtors )
What is the most common SSRI ?
Fluoxetine
What are SNRI’s ?
SNRIs (Serotonin-Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors) are antidepressants that increase levels of noradrenaline by blocking reuptake into nerve cells
