Liver Flashcards
What is sepsis ?
Life threatening condition . Caused by infection which triggers systemic inflammatory response syndrome. Leads to widespread organ failure.
Signs + symptoms ?
- Fever
- shortness of breath
- Low BP
- Rapid heart rate (Tachycardia)
Why is the First hour (Golden hour) so important in treatment ?
Early identification + administration = Reduced mortality
What does the NEWS score determine in Sepsis management ?
Assesses severity of patient condition.
What dose a NEWS score of 3+ indicate ?
Sepsis screen needed + urgent medical attention
What is the Sepsis Six bundle ?
Six key interventions to be carried out WITHIN 1st hour of diagnosis.
What are the 6 steps ?
1) High-flow oxygen to maintain oxygen saturation (94%)
2) Blood cultures (before starting antibiotics). Find causative bacteria
3) Administration of antibiotics in accordance with local guidelines
4) Rapid Infusion of fluids to improve circulation
5) Serum lactate and hemoglobin measurement
6)Monitor urine output to assess organ function
How is antimicrobial stewardship maintained in Sepsis ?
Means starting broad-spectrum antibiotics + narrowing them down based on culture results once infection is identified.
When should antibiotics be reviewed in Sepsis. ?
Every 48-72 hours
When should a patient switch from IV to oral antibiotics ?
- Improvement in symptoms.
- Stable vital signs.
- Patient can tolerate oral medication and has no issues with absorption.
